Today, I will spend about 4 hours looking for a job. I know that statistically speaking, 3 hours and 48 minutes of that time will result in absolutely nothing. I will be completely ignored.
The other 12 minutes, I will get a response, but it will lead to a dead end. That’s just the way things go. Times are tough.
I will spend most of the rest of the day doing various other things. Odd jobs for pocket change. Running an errand here and there. The administrative stuff of life.
I will also spend 30 minutes writing. From California, what I have to say will radiate out to Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, India, and Hong Kong. It will not spread because I spread it. It will spread because other people spread it, from friend to friend to friend.
By the time I go to bed tonight, I will have spent 240 minutes looking for a job, and every one of those minutes will have returned absolutely nothing. I will have also spent 30 minutes writing, and while I sleep, my words will continue spreading through the world, touching people and making their lives better.
When I find a job, I will rock at it, because that’s just the way I roll. But writing gets me a pretty good return on my investment, right now, today. That’s why I do it.
